What Is CNY To Me?

What Is Chinese New Year To Me?

Chinese New Year is a fascinating time for me, although I must admit, it can be quite confusing too! You see, for 362 days of the year, garbage is just garbage. But when Chinese New Year comes around, it is like magic happens. Suddenly, what used to be trash turns into precious gold! We have to keep it all nice and tidy, and then, the very next day, we have to throw it away. It is like a puzzling game of garbage transformations! I do not understand how adults and other Chinese people are not as confused as I am! Another thing that baffles me is the loud sounds. Normally, everyone thinks loud noises are just noise. But during those three days of Chinese New Year, loud noises are believed to bring prosperity. It is like a switch flips, and suddenly, the louder the better! It can be quite fun though because during this time, you can talk loudly without getting scolded. That part is kind of cool, I guess. One of the things I absolutely love about Chinese New Year is the chance to play with pop-pops, Catherine wheels, and sparklers. It is like we have the freedom to enjoy them to the fullest. We can compete with our cousins and siblings to see who can throw their pop-pops the farthest or whose sparklers shine the brightest. It brings a sense of playful excitement to the celebration. However, sometimes these playful moments lead to small mishaps. I remember one time when one of our Catherine wheels accidentally rolled under a neighbour’s car! We were so scared that the sparks would cause the car to explode. Even though it was probably under there for only ten seconds, it felt like an eternity to me. We anxiously waited until the sparks stopped, and then we quickly retrieved the wheel before anyone noticed. Phew! I thoroughly enjoy Chinese New Year, and so do my cousins, family members, and friends. It is a time of joy and celebration. Plus, it is even more special because it coincides with a school holiday. School holidays are not something we get all the time, so having a rare holiday like this makes it extra fun. Just like Christmas and Halloween, Chinese New Year happens only once a year, making it a truly special occasion. With a sense of wonder and firecracker excitement ~ Nicodidiary
